Not only was this five-story property groundbreaking for locating its live-work-play concept right across the street from City Hall, it had a tight deadline, complicated logistics and happened to have been constructed during a particularly disagreeable winter. But City Plaza was ready in time for its first role — to house law enforcement officials for the 1996 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It also won the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Best in Atlanta Real Estate Award for bringing new housing downtown. Bringing a grocery store downtown was a big plus, too.
Our crews worked on the project on and off for about four months as each building was completed. We installed a modified bitumen roof with ceramic granular finish — but getting our materials to the site was no easy task. City Hall business did not pause so we could maneuver more easily! In December 2015, the City of Atlanta purchased City Plaza and is offering a percentage of the 164 furnished rental units as affordable housing.
